Students Play Online Poker to Pay for School

Many college students pay off their student loans by waiting tables, office work, or part-time retail work, but some have decided to make money playing online poker.

Kevin Laird, 20, and Daniel Stermer, 19, have both been playing online poker as their primary means of making money.

“If you are good enough, you can make money,” Laird said who is currently a full-time student at the University of Florida. “Then it can be your part-time job,” he added.

Laird began playing poker two years ago for fun, but didn’t start playing for money until just under a year ago. In the past 10 months, Laird has won $8,000 and plays online six days a week.

“You have to take poker seriously,” he said. “You have to approach it as a game of skill instead of a game of luck.”

Stermer is currently studying finance at the University of Florida and believe people have to make their own luck in poker and manipulate in order to win.

He has been playing online poker for seven months and has won $5,000 playing 6 hours every day.

“Poker is a purely competitive activity,” he said. “The key to it is that a person has to have passion for the game in order to be successful.”

Karlie Petrilla is also a sophomore at the University of Florida, studying athletic training, and began playing poker a year ago. She now plays once a week with a group of people who live on campus, but has never played online.

“Poker is more about being around people than watching it on a screen,” she said.

The most popular online poker websites are Poker Stars, Full Tilt Poker, Party Poker, Interpoker, Titan Poker, Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet.
